Heritage Certificate of Recognition

Since 2009, the Grey County Historical Society has awarded the Heritage Certificate of Recognition to individuals and organizations. The Grey County Historical Society (GCHS) Heritage Certificate of Recognition honours and recognizes a work or works of heritage by an individual, organization, institution or business that has made a significant contribution to the promotion or preservation of the history of Grey County.

Recipients

2009 - Doug and Rob Shouldice for restoring the former Shallow Lake Hotel.
2010 - Jim Brunow for restoring two homes in the former St. Vincent Township
2010 - Normanby Presbyterian Church for their history book of the church and community
2011 - St. George's Anglican Church, Owen Sound for the steeple restoration
2012 - Kemble Women's Institute for the Lookout and Parkette honouring the Women's Institute.
2013 - Andrew Armitage - preserving and promoting the history of the County of Grey through his writing
2014- Barry More - preserving heritage properties and the County of Grey - restoration work on Culvert 21 (historic bridge at Chatsworth)
2015 - Les MacKinnon - preserving and promoting the history of the Black people of the County.
2016 - George Auer for the history book Soldiers of the Soil that preserves Grey County's military history
2016 - Community Waterfront Heritage Centre for preserving the Marine Rail Museum and promoting and preserving the marine, rail and industrial heritage of Owen Sound
2017 - Richard Thomas for promoting, preserving and sharing the stories and photographs of Grey County's history through several media.
2018 - Ron McCann for his work as a dedicated volunteer at Grey Roots
2018 - Harley Greenfield for his promotion of the history of Grey County through theatrical presentations.
2019 - no nominations
2020 - Jean Hutchinson for her book Country Midwife: The Story of Elizabeth Harvey Ward Nuhn and other contributions to the preservation of local history
2020 - Robert A. Cotton for his book Owen Sound Harbour: A Photographic History and other contributions to the preservation of local history.
2021 - Edith Ruth Kitchen and J. Douglas Hethrington have worked as a team on research.Ruth Kitchen has been working with Doug Hethringtonto share her trove of family material, including materials compiled on genealogical visits to the UK. While Doug in turn acts to share research and create historical narratives.
2021 - Sylvia and Carolyn Wilson for preserving and sharing Black history of this area through the operation of the Sheffield Park Black History & Culural Museum
2022 - Greenwood Cemetery, Owen Sound, Potter's Field Monument Volunteer Steering Committee: Aly Boltman, and John and Shirley Reaburn
2023 - Craigleith Heritage Depot for its REEL History Project
2024 - No nominations received

Grey County Historical Society 2024 Heritage Certificate of Recognition
The Grey County Historical Society (GCHS) Heritage Certificate of Recognition honours and recognizes a work or works of heritage by an individual, organization, institution or business that has made a significant contribution to the promotion or preservation of the history of Grey County.

Nominations
Nominations are invited from members of the public. The nominees must confirm their willingness to be nominated and accept the subsequent publicity. Current members of the Board of Directors of GCHS, the judging panel and their immediate family may not be nominated. The Board of Directors reserves the right not to award a certificate of recognition in any given year.

Heritage work that may be nominated includes any of the following:
• Long time service in the heritage field,
• Built heritage,
• Natural heritage,
• Written work and research in formats other than print, such as the visual or dramatic arts.

Nominations will be reviewed by the GCHS Award Presentation Committee and its recommendation will be presented to the Board of Directors for ratification.

The Award
A framed certificate will be presented to the winner at the next GCHS Annual Dinner (date and place to be confirmed when we are able to meet safely), where the winner will be a guest. If the award winner is unable to attend, the award will be presented at another appropriate time. If a business, institution or organization is selected, up to two people will be recognized and invited. Each award winner may bring a guest to the Annual Dinner.

Nomination Submission Guidelines
Submissions must include the completed nomination form and supporting information:
• A description of why the individual or organization should be recognized, with emphasis on how the nominee's significant contributions have preserved or promoted the history of Grey County and the lasting benefits.

• Supporting materials such as brochures, posters, plans, photographs, media coverage, and letters of support. If for the dramatic arts, a copy of the work should be included on CD or DVD. If for written work such as a book, a copy of the publication must be included with the submission.

Materials submitted become the property of GCHS and will not be returned. GCHS reserves the right to retain any items for future historical research. The nomination form with personal information about the nominee and nominator will not be kept once the award has been presented.
